28072025 Jens Rosing would have celebrated his 100th Birthday on 28th July 2025 By Pertti Frandsen Jens Christian Rosing was born in Ilulissat on 28th July the Arctic landscape. A recurring theme in his works was 1925 to Otto Rosing and Sara Siegstad. As a visual artist, the traditional Greenlandic life – especially the hunting writer, film-maker, etc., Jens Rosing became one of Green- culture, sled dogs, kayaks and hunting scenes, which land’s most celebrated cultural icons. However, it is as a he reproduced in great detail and authenticity. He had stamp artist that we stamp collectors and tremendous insight into the hunter’s lifestyle stamp enthusiasts know him best. and the Inuit way of life, which is reflected in The ‘Grand Old Man’ of the authenticity and warmth that his designs exude to this day. Greenlandic stamps No other artist has illustrated as many stamp designs as Jens Rosing. Over a period spanning 51 years he designed over 150 stamps. His characteristic clean lines and simple forms are expressed in the myriad of miniature artworks which, through genera- tions, have been placed on letter post and been included in numerous collections. All of Jens Rosing’s stamps were charac- terised by his deep respect and fascination for Greenland’s indigenous culture and ”The Mother of the Sea”. Drawn by Jens Rosing, engraved by Bent Jacobsen Among the multitude of stamps created by Jens Rosing, it is difficult to highlight a few without doing a disservice to others. Nevertheless, his first stamp from 1957 is particularly memorable. His beautiful interpretation of the legend of the Mother of the Sea and the animal kingdom that the Mother of the Sea reigns over, almost instils today’s viewer with a sense of the profusion of cultural heritage and stamp art to come from Jens Rosing in the ensuing half century. Technically, Jens Rosing’s works transitioned from a more classic engraving style to watercolours and drawings, affording greater variation in expression over the years. However, a common feature in all his works was a sense of proportion, composition and narrative – all condensed into the minia- ture stamp format, which Jens Rosing mastered perfectly. The stamp featuring Jens Rosing’s portrait was designed by Martin Mörck from a photograph by Ivars Silis. It is available in sheets of 10 identical stamps, a souvenir sheet, a black print, a souvenir folder and a Prestige Booklet. Read more about the Prestige Booklet on page 12. The girl depicted on the souvenir sheet looking at one of Jens Rosing’s designs, is his daughter Ina. She is the young- est of Jens’ and Dagny Rosing’s four children.
