Tribute to the National Dog Sledding Race By Pertti Frandsen On 28th March 2026 Tusass Greenland issued a stamp illustrated by multi-artist Miki Jacobsen. The stamp pays tribute to the annual Greenland Dog Sledding Champion- ship, the country’s most prestigious dog sled race. Miki Jacobsen’s design captures the unique atmosphere surrounding the championship, where the best mushers from all over Greenland meet to compete in a tradition that has profoundly impacted life in the Arctic for gener- ations. The race is not only a sporting event but, also an important cultural highlight that celebrates the continued role of dog sledding in Greenlandic society. In Greenland there is a designated dog district where it is permitted to keep sled dogs and operate dog sleds. The regulation has been created to preserve the traditional Greenlandic sled dog and associated sledding culture. Consequently, sled dogs may be kept and used North of the Polar Circle in West Greenland in such towns as Sisimiut, Ilulissat and Qaanaaq. Throughout East Greenland, includ- ing around Tasiilaq and Ittoqqortoormiit, this tradition may also be upheld in all its forms and for all purposes. Hosting the Dog Sledding Championship alternates between the towns. This year’s race was hosted by Qasigiannguit. Before the race was held, sales repre- sentative Najaaraq Kleist at the Tusass shop in Sisimiut, presented three members of Avannaata Qimmusersua, the National Dogsledding Association, with a framed sheet of the stamp. They were Reginal Kruse Rafaelsen, Piitannguaq Kristensen and Paninguak’Kruse Rafaelsen, who all live in Sisimiut and who travelled to Qasigiannguit in connection with the race. With the stamp Tusass Greenland marks this annual event while also paying tribute to the proud dog sled tradition through a powerful visual design created by Miki Jacobsen, who rode dog sleds as a child and a young man. The stamp is printed in offset and issued in sheets of 10 identical stamps. Photo: Tusass Greenland. About the artist: Miki Jacobsen was born 1965 in Paamiut and grew up in Sisimiut.
