2023 Greenlandic Stamp of the Year awarded By Pertti Frandsen Tusass has been holding an annual competition to select the Greenland stamp of the Year since 2001. During this time thousands of collectors of Greenlandic stamps have cast their votes and participated in the annual draws for a marvellous grand prize as well as ten Year Packs. Over the years collectors from ten different countries have won the grand prize. These lucky Greenland collectors have resided in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Austria, Italy, USA, Norway, Denmark and Greenland. In recent years the grand prize has been an iPhone, which was also the case this year. We received 3,130 votes this year across all 24 stamps issued by Green- land in 2023. There was a very clear winner, with just over every fourth vote going to the stamp G742. The artist Ágúst Kristinsson illustrated the captivating design, which was also included in Maria Bach Kreutzmann’s book of mythical creatures ’Bestiar- ium Groenlandica’. The stamp was printed in offset and issued on 27th February 2023. Last year’s additional value stamp G754, which was issued in benefit of the Greenlandic Patient Home, came second with 13.83% of the votes. It was young artist Coco Apunnguaq Lynge’s debut stamp which was printed in offset and issued 28th August 2023. Finally, Martin Brandt Hansen’s EUROPA stamp G750 achieved third place receiving an excellent 12.84% of the votes. The stamp was issued 30th May 2023 and also printed in offset. A winner was randomly drawn among all the valid votes we received. The grand prize in the competition, an iPhone 15 Pro, was won by Andy Macdonald from England. He told us: “I started collecting as a boy, but soon gave it up for other interests when I was a teenager! In the early 1990s, I wanted a hobby as an alternative to watching television after a hard day’s work and putting the children to bed. I thought stamp collecting would be an easy, restful option. I started collecting ’the whole world’ but soon cut this back to China and related areas. I have got side-tracked sometimes and have a small collection of marine mammals on stamps, dolphins & whales mostly. Another side project is the stamps of Greenland, although I don’t have many. In fact, I have cut back my serious collecting to China 1937-1949, the war with Japan and the civil war period - and I still find stamps take up much of my time. I also play guitar and sing, mostly in the blues style and I have a large garden and two dogs to take care of, so I am always busy!” Tusass Greenland extends our heartiest congratulations to Andy on winning the grand prize, which has been forwarded to him. Voting to select ‘2023 Greenlandic Stamp of the Year‘ was held from 1st March to 2nd April 2024. The competition ran in the Greenland Collector at www.stamps.gl and via our email newsletter.
